VHB 4920 Double Sided Acrylic Foam Tape

VHB 4920 is a white double coated acrylic foam tape with a thickness of 0.4 mm (0.015 inch) and a densified kraft paper liner. It uses a general-purpose acrylic adhesive on both sides, designed to bond effectively to a wide range of high surface energy (HSE) materials such as metals, glass, painted surfaces, and easy-to-bond plastics.

This product is part of the 3M VHB 4950 series, which features a firm foam structure and general-purpose acrylic adhesive. Different products within this family vary in thickness, color, and liner type.

It is designed to replace traditional mechanical fastening methods such as rivets, screws, and welding in structural bonding applications.

Key Performance Features

High Strength Structural Bonding:Provides reliable and durable bonding performance for metals, glass, and coated surfaces in industrial environments.

Firm Foam Construction:The rigid foam core helps distribute stress evenly across the bond line, improving long-term durability.

Excellent Vibration Resistance:Effectively absorbs vibration and impact, reducing mechanical fatigue and joint failure.

Fast Initial Handling Strength:Develops immediate handling strength upon application, improving assembly efficiency without curing time.

Wide Substrate Compatibility:Suitable for bonding metals, glass, painted surfaces, and selected plastics with high surface energy.

Application Areas

VHB 4920 double sided foam tape is widely used in:

  • Appliance panel and door bonding
  • Glass-to-metal structural assembly
  • Metal frame and panel bonding
  • Signage and logo attachment
  • Transportation interior and exterior bonding
  • Commercial vehicle component assembly
  • Rail car and industrial equipment assembly
  • Decorative trim and panel mounting

Suitable for both indoor and outdoor industrial environments.

Surface Preparation Guidelines

Proper surface preparation is essential for optimal adhesion:

  • Clean surfaces using a 70/30 IPA/water solution
  • Remove heavy oils with a degreaser if necessary
  • Abrade oxidized or contaminated surfaces to improve adhesion
  • Use adhesion promoters for plastics and coated materials
  • Seal porous substrates such as wood or concrete
  • Special preparation may be required for glass, copper, and plasticizer-containing materials

Pressure Application

Apply firm and uniform pressure of approximately 100 kPa (15 psi) to ensure full adhesive contact. Roller or platen pressure is recommended.

Application Temperature

Recommended application temperature: 21°C–38°C
Minimum application temperature: 10°C–15°C

Bond Strength Development

  • Approximately 50% strength after 20 minutes
  • Approximately 90% strength after 24 hours
  • 100% final strength after 72 hours

Heat exposure or surface priming can accelerate bond strength development.
